Early, One Christmas Eve Morning

SUMMER VACATION EDITION

1 day till Christmas

Christmas Eve…you’ve arrived rather spontaneously, haven’t you? You sneaky minx. We have a rather dumb saying in my household that is usually said on Christmas Day, after the turkey plays tricks on your mind and the champagne dislodges your spine: “It’s almost next Christmas again!” But, looking at things now, nothing can be more true. I remember saying this not too long ago over a stacked plate of festive grub and lo and behold, the baby Jesus cometh once again, tomorrow.

I can’t complain though. Not only is the baby Jesus the most awesome person to have ever walked this mostly (otherwise) God-forsaken planet, I am decidedly happy about seeing the back of 2011, who was, in contrast, a cheap-wine drinking, demonic bastard of a year. And I can only stress what a shit year this was. It was a SHIT year.

On that point, 2011 seems to be as much a turning point in many of my friends’ lives than any other year before. New jobs, new college endeavours and new relationships all ending and forming before us. It’s great to see but it’s not always that great to experience when you’re in something of a bog yourself. A deep personal, financial and social bog. The worst kind I believe. I am working on it though… perhaps I might have someone to kiss at midnight in a week’s time after all. One can never be too certain in this life… one thing I’ve learnt this year.

Anyhow, this week looks great though. Advent and Week 52 is my favourite time of year. Somehow, people seem happier, more at ease and not complete assholes (this, however, does not apply to the malls or roads though). I think 2012 will be a good year, even though the Mayans are sceptical.

Until then, there’s 8 days of incredible fun laying before me on a big, wide table called Cape Town. Happy Holidays all and Merry Christmas!
